Is Your New Roof Failing You?

So you did it. You spent the money for a brand new roof. You got a great price. You feel like you’ve won. Fast forward three months and your roof is failing you. Leaks, torn shingles, you name it, it’s happening. How could this be? The contractor you used seemed great. His prices were better than anyone. He came all the way from out of town to do your roof. Is your new roof failing you? Let’s discuss reasons why this could be happening.

Incorrect Installation

When installing a roof, there are proper steps to take to ensure the new roof will withstand the elements for years to come. Even the best material will fail without proper installation. Find a roofer that works specifically with a well known manufacturer. This will ensure the contractor knows how to install this specific material.

Issues With Ventilation

The best roof installation out there will not hold up when paired with poor ventilation. No matter the climate, inadequate ventilation can and will severely affect the life of your brand new roof.

Going Cheap On Materials

Especially in the roofing business, you get what you pay for. Cheap materials are not going to get you the benefits of the roof your home deserves.

Chappell Roofing Won’t Fail You

The sad fact is, “fly-by-night roofers” come and go, and the jobs they complete fail to last like they should. A contractor in from out of town right after a storm who is offering crazy cheap rates should rise some red flags. These roofers sometimes don’t even complete the job.

Factors to Consider When Replacing Your Roof

Much to their dismay, most homeowners at some point will have to completely replace the roof on their home. So, why not choose a trusted, local company like Chappell Roofing? With over 15 years experience in the Permian Basin, Chappell can make the stress of replacing your roof a lot less overwhelming.

When replacing your roof, there are many options you can go with, but being in West Texas, it’s best to read up on recommended roofs for West Texas weather and the factors to consider when replacing your roof.

The Choice Is Yours

Different options for roofing material include fiberglass shingles, asphalt shingles, metal roofs and much more. With as big of an investment as a roof is, making the right decision is very important.

Cost

A new roof is a big investment, but we recommend you consider the long-term benefits, instead of how much a roof costs at the time of purchase.

Home Design And Style

The style and design of your home will largely impact type of roof style you choose. Roofing is like the cherry on top of a beautiful home, so you want it to look great! Chappell offers FREE inspection and FREE same-day estimates to help you in your decision-making.

Home Location

Climate plays a big role in which roof type you choose. Slate shingles and metal roofs offer better resistance to wind than an asphalt shingle roof does. Being in West Texas, high winds are not out of the ordinary. Sheet or shingled metal roofing can stand winds up to 140mph. Metal roofs also typically last longer than asphalt shingle roofs.

Roof Shape

When choosing a new roof, it’s also wise to consider your existing roof’s slope and angles. It’s important to know that asphalt shingles are very versatile and can be used with almost any roof that has a slope. Flat roofs may require a different type of product other than shingles. Consult with Chappell today for a recommendation you can trust!

Uncommon Causes Of Roof Damage

Chappell Roofing is dedicated to providing quality roofs for you home. However, there are many causes of roof damage that are out of your control. These can include hail, wind, and improper installation. However, there might be some things you might not even expect that might cause issues later on down the road. Read more about some of the more uncommon causes of roof damage…and how you can prevent them.

Ice Dams

While we don’t get a lot of ice or snow in West Texas, we certainly get a bit every year. Though icicles may be gorgeous, accumulated ice and snow on your roof can cause damage. An ice dam is essentially where ice builds up in your gutters and snow falls on top. A small “pond” of water is trapped beneath the snow, as it cannot move past the ice build-up. This water can damage shingles and potentially cause leaks. There are two ways to prevent this. First, make sure your roof is well insulated. This is not meant to make your attic warm; it’s mean to keep warm air inside the confines of your home, as a warm roof melts snow and ice, which can cause it to melt. Secondly, there are roofing ice barriers that can be installed. You can ask us about this option for your next roof!

Ice, trees, & squirrels...oh, my!

Ice, trees, & squirrels…oh, my!

The Natural World

Birds, squirrels, and other little creatures are absolutely adorable…but they’re better away from your roof. Animals usually prefer to enter your attic through ventilation outlets and soffits in order to make nests. Once they’re inside, the animals, especially rodents like mice, squirrels, and rats, can gnaw through your wiring. The best way to avoid this is to keep tree branches trimmed and away from your roof. While this doesn’t prevent birds, it can help you avoid rodents. Also be sure to check your roof and attic often for animal droppings and any gaps.

Trees

As beautiful as they are, trees can actually damage your roof! Branches can scratch shingles and pull them off, especially on blustery West Texas days. Heavy or old, dead branches can also be dangerous to your roof. High winds or ice storms can cause branches to break and fall on your roof. This can cause extensive damage to your roof. We highly recommend getting your trees trimmed annually and to make sure that all low branches are away from your roof and gutters.

We hope that we’ve been able to fill you in on some of the more unusual, but possible, causes of roof damage. Chappell Roofing is committed to providing quality materials with a 5-year workmanship warranty against leaks and blow-offs from winds up to 70mph. Call us to get a quote today!

The Timberline High Definition Architectural Shingle

Your roof can represent 40% of your home’s curb appeal.

At Chappell Roofing, we are in the business of making your roof the best on the block. We use only the best quality materials, making your roof stand out and adding to the curb appeal (and value!) of your home. One of the many roofing products we install is by Timberline, a company best known for creating North America’s #1-Selling Shingle, the Timberline High Definition Architectural Shingle.

Timberline High Definition Architectural Shingle

These shingles are #1 for a reason. The shingles themselves are composed of fiberglass asphalt, with a wood-shake look (without the wood-shake price). These shingles protect your most valuable asset, your home, with a Class A (highest) fire rating from Underwriters Laboratories.

The Timberline High Definition Architectural Shingle is designed with Advanced Protection technology, providing superior performance and protection, but minimizing the use of natural resources. The Dura Grip Adhesive seals each shingle tightly, nearly eliminating the risk of blow-off. In fact, they can withstand winds up to 130 MPH!

The UV blocking granules in the Timberline High Definition Architectural Shingle protect against the damage from the sun, improving both the durability and sustainability of the roof. These protective granules, along with the Color Lock Ceramic Firing, also allow the shingles to hold their deep color longer than other brands, again, adding and maintaining the curb appeal of your home.

Do I Need A New Roof?

Before filing a claim on your insurance, you want to be sure that you actually need a new roof on your home. Fortunately, there are several signs that help you answer the question, “Do I need a new roof?”

5 Signs You Need A New Roof:

  1. Attic Leak – If you notice a leak in your attic, especially after a storm, you could possible have a leak in your roof. If so, you may need to consider repairing, or even replacing your roof.
  1. Peeling Paint – Is your paint peeling (interior or exterior)? This may be due to trapped moisture in the house due to high temperatures or poor attic ventilation. Be sure there are vents in areas such as the kitchen or bathroom to reduce humidity.
  1. Missing/Damaged Shingles – If you notice that the shingles on your roof are missing or otherwise damaged, your roof has probably reached the end of its useful life and may need to be replaced.
  1. Dark Areas – Do you see dark patches on your roof? This could mean several things, from a fungus or just a loss of protective granules. Be sure when you do have your roof replaced, your new shingles have StainGuard Protection to keep this from happening again!
  1. High Energy Costs – If your utility bills are through the roof (pun intended), you could need a new roof. Insufficient attic ventilation can cause these high energy costs, due to the cooling system running excessively.

Hopefully, this helps answer your question, “Do I need a new roof?” But if it doesn’t, please give us a call! We are more than happy to answer any roofing questions you may have, as well as give you a FREE estimate on repair/replacement. 432-312-8705
